David Gorman and new crew David Cahill romped to victory in the final day of the Woodbine Property Management NYC Frostbite Series on Sunday. The pair scored a faultless 12 wins from 12 over the event to finish a full 21 nett points clear of the chasing fleet.
Michael McCambridge and Peter Murphy took second place, a single point ahead of Charlie Boland and Andrew Paul, who had travelled from Waterford for each of the four days in the series.
The Flying Fifteens revelled in a strong south-easterly, thought to have reached 30 knots, and a big sea (conditions in which some Dublin Bay racing has been cancelled this year) and the talk later was of de-powering techniques, with advice offered to improvers ranging from the fiendishly technical to the brutally simple.
Gorman had three bullets to throw away as discards, and later on he also gave away his prize in the raffle when his name came out of the hat for €250 worth of Western Marine winter storage kindly donated by Ronan Beirne’s Leinsterboats.ie. One wag commented that only Gorman could win 13 out of 12.
When the draw was re-run, the prize went to a delighted John O’Sullivan.
All present at the prize-giving expressed their deep appreciation for the efforts of the event committee, which had representatives of the Mermaid and Flying Fifteen fleet as well as the National YC, and which provided four Sundays of wonderful sailing.
